Learning to Hear the Whispers of Spirit
Dear Friend
Have you ever felt that you're ready for something new in your life, but somehow you just can't seem to move forward?
Maybe you're looking for a new sense of purpose, wanting to deepen your spiritual connection, or simply feeling that it's time for a change.
We often assume that the answer is to add something new.
- Another book.
- Another meditation.
- Another spiritual practice.
- Another search for answers.
But sometimes the opposite is true.
Sometimes, before we can welcome something new, we need to create some space for it to arrive.
As an analogy, think about a room in your home that's become cluttered. You can keep bringing beautiful new things into it, but eventually there's simply nowhere to put them. The same thing can happen within us.
Equally, we can become filled with old beliefs, past experiences, worries, expectations and emotional baggage that we may have been carrying for years.
And sometimes we don't even realise we're still carrying them.
Creating spiritual space doesn't mean forgetting the past or pushing away everything we've experienced. It means taking a gentle look at what's still taking up room within us and asking:
“Do I still need this?”
Perhaps it's an old belief about yourself that you've outgrown. Maybe it's something someone said to you that you've continued to believe. Perhaps you're holding onto a disappointment, a fear, or even an expectation about how your life should be.
When we begin to release some of that old clutter, something interesting can happen.
- We become quieter.
- We become lighter.
- And we become more available to hear the whispers of our own intuition and Spirit.

One of the things I've learned over the years is that spiritual growth isn't always about doing more.
Sometimes it's about letting go.
We can become so focused on finding the next answer that we don't stop to ask whether we're making room for the answer to find us.
If your mind and heart are constantly filled with noise, old stories and things that no longer serve you, it can be difficult to recognise something new when it comes along.
That's why I believe that creating space is such an important part of our spiritual journey.
You don't have to clear everything at once. In fact, I wouldn't recommend it.
Start small.
Choose one thing you're ready to release.
It could be a thought, a belief, a worry, a habit or even something in your physical surroundings that has been weighing on you.
Then notice how you feel when you allow yourself to put it down.
You may discover that creating space isn't about losing something.
It's about becoming available for something new.
Try These Exercises: Four Ways to Create Space
1. Ask: “What am I ready to release?”
Find a quiet place and write down three things you feel you're carrying that you no longer need.
Don't overthink your answers. Perhaps a fear. An old belief. A resentment. Something you keep worrying about.
Then, beside each one, write: “I am willing to release this.”
You don't have to know how it will happen. The important thing is beginning the process.
2. Create ten minutes of silence
For ten minutes each day, put down your phone, turn off the television and step away from outside stimulation.
Sit quietly. Breathe. Don't meditate unless you want to. Don't try to receive a message. Simply allow yourself to experience what it feels like when nothing is demanding your attention.
Notice what arises in the quiet.
Sometimes we don't need more information. We simply need less noise.
3. Clear one physical space
Choose one drawer, shelf, cupboard or corner of your home that has become cluttered.
Clear it completely. Keep only what you genuinely want or need.
As you do this, imagine that you're also clearing a little space within yourself.
You might even ask: “What else in my life is ready to be cleared?”
Often, our physical surroundings can reflect what's happening internally.
4. Leave some space for the unexpected
Look at your diary or calendar this week.
Is every moment filled? Try leaving one small period completely open. Don't decide what you're going to do with it. Don't fill it with another task.
Just leave it empty
Because sometimes it is in those empty spaces that inspiration appears.

You don't have to know what's coming next. You don't have to have the whole journey figured out.
For now, simply begin creating a little more room. Let go of what you've outgrown.
Quiet the noise. Clear what no longer belongs.
And then allow yourself to be curious about what might enter the space you've created. Something new may already be trying to find its way into your life.
