Many people have no problem being givers, but when it comes time to receive then some people find it much harder and struggle. There has to be a natural balance between both giving and receiving; a bit like the ebb and flow of the tide. The concept of learning to receive was brought home to me many years ago when I was living alone and trying to make ends meet, with just enough money to pay all the bills. One day, I came home to find an envelope stuffed under my door with my name scribbled on it. It was from a dear friend and she explained how she’d come into a little extra money and knew that I could use some. She’d enclosed a bundle of bills and said she wanted me to have it. As I held the money in my hand, I stood there and cried, wondering if she knew just how much her generosity meant to me at that time, not just from a financial aspect, but from an emotional and spiritual level. To me, it was a perfect example of how people care, how people can reach out and touch each other’s lives. When she signed the note, she explained how she was practicing the act of tithing and she’d thought of me first. When you tithe something to someone, they don’t need to know who it’s from. It’s the act of giving that’s important without expecting anything in return. Most of us tithe all the time when we give to charities, or even when we volunteer our time, which is just another form of tithing—the act of giving back. Many years later, I learned that my friend was having a tough time herself financially. I was in a better financial position, and able to give freely. She'd moved to a new city and was looking for a new job, so had no money coming in. I wasted no time and returned the gesture she’d made years earlier and gave her back what she’d given me, only this time I double what she gave me! When she’d left me that gift years ago, she hadn’t given me the money as a loan or expected to get it back. She’d demonstrated a beautiful act of kindness, gratitude for our friendship, and love. I’ll never forget it. She may have given me money, but in reality at that time, what she’d really given me … was hope. I love being able to give, no matter how small the gesture might be. Whether it’s sending a little gift in the mail, or something I do occasionally when I’m driving through the toll, is that I’ll pay the toll for the next driver behind me. Imagine their response when the toll taker says that the person in front of you just paid for your toll. It’s just my way of encouraging others to learn to receive as well as give. Whether the gesture is big or small, it doesn’t matter when it comes time to helping each other. Have an attitude of gratitude, for it will create a ripple effect more than you could ever know. |

Take a moment and think about how you can give back. Many people may not have the financial funds to give a monetary donation, but there are so many ways that you can give back in gratitude. It's not what you give - but the thought and act that is important. Here are just a few ways you can express gratitude. Saying prayers of thanks By giving back, you’re acknowledging and honoring the Divine Source, and by doing so, you’re keeping the energy of the "giving and receiving circle" open and flowing. When you focus on having an attitude of gratitude, you’re really sharing, so that everyone benefits. Have a Soul-Filled Life!
